Markus Belmann studied church music (among others with Prof. Sieglinde Ahrens, organ and Prof. Iwona Salling, piano) and conducting in the Kapellmeister class of Prof. David De Villiers at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen and at the Conservatorium Maastricht.
After working as a church musician in Essen-Haarzopf during his studies, he became cantor in Nettetal (regional focus for choral music in the diocese of Aachen) and Kevelaer, where he was choir director and deputy basilica organist and was involved in the rebuilding of the choral youth work.
Since 2008 Markus Belmann has been cantor at the Maxkirche in Düsseldorf, one of the most prominent church music locations in the Rhineland, as well as leading church musician in the city of Düsseldorf. In addition to the Maxchor, one of the largest and most active choirs in the Archdiocese of Cologne, he is the director of the chamber choir schola cantorum, the Choralschola St. Maximilian and the children’s choir, which he founded. He teaches organ as part of the C-training of the Archdiocese of Cologne and is artistic director of the weekly Marktmusik, the oldest organ concert series in the state capital. Belmann supervised izwei organ-building projects that have had a lasting impact on the organ landscape in Düsseldorf’s old town. Projects in the context of the city pastoral, such as guided tours, lectures, courses, etc., round out his activities.
Starting in the winter semester 2018/19, Markus Belmann will teach organ at the International Music Academy Anton Rubinstein in Düsseldorf and since 2021 he has been a lecturer at the Beethoven Conservatorium in Tegelen.
